Tell us which is your favourite Shooting Ground?
My favourite ground is Mid Wales Shooting Centre at Trefeglwys, Near Caersws, Powys.
A warm friendly welcome is always assured and the facilities are superb for whatever discipline you prefer to shoot. Shooting facilities which includes 16 Trap Layouts, 4 Skeet layouts and 18 Sporting Stands set in 300 acres of beautiful countryside.
Fantastic food is served in the magnificent clubhouse by Rachel and her staff, whilst Rita and Yvonne do a great job of running the extremely busy office.
The ground is Run by Arthur, Rita, Jonathan and Liza, and their very experienced staff who can never do enough to make their customers happy.
Although it’s a 170 mile round journey, I always look forward to my Mid Wales outings

mid wales is one of my favourite grounds,it has everything, a chalanging sporting layout, skeet, abt, dtl ,
you always get a warm welcome at mid wales
the only let down is the traps on the sporting are not very reliable,
i like going to dovey valley as well,
mainly for the sporting, i don’t go to dovey valley as often as mid wales because mid wales costs £22/100 dovey £28/100
Is the shooting the only reason you like going to Mid Wales Gwyn?
I thought you went there for the £4.50 breakfast..
Dovey Valley is good, but very expensive for the grass roots shooter.
no, shooting isen’t the only reason i go to mid wales, it’s not just the price of the breakfast, it’s the smile you get with it as well
Do you mean the smile you get from Rachel every time she takes your money
i have a very fond memory of shooting at griffin lloyd,it was the sporting final three years ago,i don’t remember much about the actual shoot but i will never forget locking
shandy man in the portaloo, for those of you who don’t know who shandy man is, he is no other than gwynedd shooter ken griffith,
i am sure every one would like to know the story behind how the name shandy man came about,
go on ken, tell us your side of the story.
Ha bloody ha..
It wasn’t shandy it was lager tops (90% lager 10% Lemonade). I also drunk 10 bottles of Smirnoff Ice, a real man’s drink Gwyn
.
This year will be different as I intend to stay sober and beat you in the Final.
As to the toilet incident, you and Ant locked me in there, whilst you two did unspeakable things outside. If the owner of Griffin Lloyd reads this, I’m worried he might ban you and Ant this year for gross misconduct
No but I’m reading it and I will be breathalysing you Gwynedd boys before you start shooting this year!!
Just a message for all the readers who don’t know, Clay Shooting mag is now running a page called ‘Within Wales’(nothing to do with the WCTSA) so future Finals will be published in there as well as the web page as well as anything YOU lot want to put in!
Shit lads!!! Angie’s going to breathalyze us at the final
Don’t worry, it’s better than an Angie DIY urine test
The last bloke who had that has never recovered.
Hiya Ken, my favourit Welsh ground is J K Lewis’s, I first won the Welsh Open Vet winners cup there.with a 86 only 5 behind top gun Nigel Hart. For all its faults Crynant used to put on some good shoots, Mid Wales and SW 2000 were good grounds but not really sporting grounds, have lots of good friends in Wales, Alas I havent rejoined this year due to lack of dosh now, following my operation las September. Best wishes to the Welsh Sporting guys.
Hi Ron, and welcome to my week old Blog
I have to admit, I’ve never heard of J K Lewis’s ground (or did you mean Crynant?).
I’ve shot at Crynant twice and I’ve always done quite well there, apart from one stand which I just couldn’t figure out. As you say Mid Wales and South Wales 2000 are not really sporting grounds and cater mostly for trap and skeet shooters. But saying that, Mid Wales only charge £22 per 100 for practice which is a fantastic price these days.
For a sporting ground you just can’t beat Dyfi Valley, as they have such a diverse landscape, but it will cost an extra fiver per hundred.
Next month a few of us are going to one of our favourite sporting grounds over the border, Hodnet Shooting Ground. We just love it there as their hospitality is second to none.
By the way, that 86 you shot at a sporting shoot is a fantastic score, I really wish I could do that.
Forgot to ask Ron, where are you from?
Also I can understand your ‘lack of dosh’ comment, shooting has become really expensive over the last couple of years, and as a lowly Council Worker on a small wage I’m struggling to fund my hobby.
Hope you recover soon from your operation and get back out there, a once a month 50 birder is better than no shooting at all.
Sorry Ken, I should have said Griffin Lloyd SG, beautiful ground, in parts as good as Dovey or Hodnet,I shall be at MY favourit ground of all in March, The Police Cheshire Shield, at—HODNET, my local ground now only 20 mile away. When shooting for Wales I shot all over GB,Scotland, England, America,Wales, I had a great time, shooting with a great set of team mates,my last time was in 05 when I won a team bronze in the world Sporting in San Antonio USA! topped off winning the Vet high gun and the vets class, with John Bolas at the Home International down at Newnam Park SG! I am still in A class but havent shot well the last few months I am nearly 71 now, and you dont get better when you start clapping out! Regards, Ron T, Berettaman.
Griffin Lloyd is where we will be in April for the Welsh Counties Sporting Final. Great ground but hard work on the legs.
Your shooting record is fantastic, and although your 20 years older than me I bet you could still beat everyone in my County Team
I’m B class in Sporting, Skeet, and All-Round, and C in DTL. My crowning achievement was beating the then World Champion Dave Hughes at a Counties Final at Dovey Valley a few years back by a full 13 birds.
I’ve been County Captain and high gun 12 times in Skeet (6) All-Round (5) and Sporting (1).
I was a late starter and held a shotgun for the first time at 34 years of age, which I will always regret.
Ahhh, just noticed your Berettaman off the Claysporting Forum, where there are some hmmm heated discussions taking place.
Well done Ken, I started shooting in 93 when I was 54 years old and was getting over a heart attack, at the end of the year I found myself in A sporting, A DTL, and AA in Double Rise!!I briefly got into AA sporting but dropped back to A and have been in it ever since. I live in Telford Shropshire, and I suppose I have been lucky with Welsh shooting ground distances, Mid W 62miles Griffin LLoyd, 45M Dovey 73M SW 2000 103M, Crynant 102.you must know Llew David, a super vet mate of mine? mind you he lives down at Whitland he’se a great old boy as well, he must be about 78 now but is back in A class sporting he also has shot skeet at a pretty high level. For you to beat Dave Hughes is a tremendous achievment, I see Dave is off to America soon. he will do well there.
You started shooting at 54 after a heart attack and ended up doing that well!!!! I’m totally gobsmacked, that is brilliant
Your actually closer to the shooting grounds than me, I have 85 miles to Mid Wales from my house on the Lleyn Peninsula, and the other grounds are a lot further.
I know Llew David as I still see him at some of the shoots. He’s still shooting well and still winning vets trophies.
As to Dave Hughes, he’s shooting brilliantly at the moment and I can’t blame him one bit for going to America, the lucky sod
I was at Dyfi Valley today for our second County Skeet and Sporting Qualifiers, and it was a beautiful sunny day. I was crap at the skeet, but I won the sporting on 43/50.
Dyfi must have the hardest skeet layout in Britain as the birds are so difficult to see with the dark background.
