What cartridges do you use?
Whilst we’ll all agree that the price of cartridges have gone up a great deal, and has to be a big factor when buying new supplies, do you still buy your usual favourites?
As much as I think that Eley Superbs are hmmmm superb
, I tend to buy what I can afford these days just to keep me shooting fairly regularly. Last weekend I bought a 1000 SMI Smini 71/2s for £128 at Mid Wales, which is a great price if they’re any good.
Has anyone used these before, and if you have, how were they?

i mainly use eley superbs cartridges but i sometimes use fiochis for skeet
you can’t beat superbs for sporting
mid wales curently sell them for £160/1000
are they cheaper anywhare else?
Eley Superbs eh?
You must be a rich builder from the North
Can anyone answer his question on getting them at a cheaper price?
Express High Velocity 24g for skeet is about the smoothest and softess shell around. If 24g is good enough for the Olympic boys then its good enough for National. It did me proud at the w-end with a 95!
Welcome to my Blog Angie.
Now tell us where you hit that fantastic 95?
With a score like that you could even shoot for Gwynedd
For a great price on cartridges try Wynnstay in Oswestry,I know it`s a bit far for some of us to get to,but you won`t regret it.Ask for Mark Lawrence or Jackie Jones (in the gunroom),tel:01691 659251.To further reduce the cost try and order enough for three or four shooters at a time to last you all year, you`ll be surprised how much they will come down in price!!Last year I ordered 15,000 Express Pro comp between three people the deal they gave me was fantastic. Also Mike Merrington in Llandegla sells Victory cartridges at excellent prices (£123/1000)
Thanks for commenting Huw
£123 a thousand for Victory cartridges, that’s a great price. It’s just a pity my fellow Gwynedd shooters don’t seem to like Llandegla, therefore we never go there.
15000 between three to last a year?
5000 would last me at least two years
Were they all 9s for skeet?
Shoot for Gwynedd…wish I had the opportunity to shoot for ANY county! It takes all my time keeping you lot in order on the day!!
You love it, getting the attention of all those men, and bossing them around..
Last Sunday I was told that yellow 12 Bore cartridges are illegal in this country, and only 20 bore cartridges are allowed to be yellow.
Does anyone know if this is true or not?
Currently using Clever Mirage T2 24g on ABT and OT. Clean, fast, light recoil, and only £155/1000 from NJ Guns, Builth. I use the more expensive T4 28g on UT shoots, again excellent. Always been an RC fan, but I thing Clever have got RC beat!!
Thanks for commenting Sidney.
Got to admit I’ve never heard of ‘Clever’ cartridges, but they do sound good from your description.
I grudge paying more than £135/1000 for cartridges, especially as I miss so many clays

They ‘won’ trap gold at the last two Olympics…. not that that means much! I refuse to go above £160 a thou usually. RC4 24g now over £210/1000!!!!! Mental.
Mirage are really worth trying, the performance are on par with the RC3′s but a damn site cheaper. Very very clean. As you can probably tell Im very enthusiastic about them!!
You don’t sell them by any chance Sid?
I heard the owner of NJ Guns was called Sidney
No Im not the owner! That’ll be Neil Jones!
Nor am I affiliated to Mirage in any way…. I wish I was…. would make my shooting a lot cheaper.
Thanks for your input Neil Sidney Jones, very much appreciated
What are Victory cartridges like in general? Not tried them yet, but sounds like they are priced well….
I last shot victory cartridges about 10 years ago, and I remember they were good then.
I find that my averages stay fairly consistent whatever cartridges I use. I think that buying expensive cartridges give shooters a mental boost more than anything else.
bought 500 smini 7 1/2 last week paid 35 pound per 250, have been using them for wood pigeons. and at the price they are excellent value for money. they are pretty hard hitting and have a good range. would even say they were as good as some game loads.
Welcome to the blog Steve..
Smini’s are great for the price, just a bit thumpy.
I still have a few left, but I haven’t seen them for sale anywhere for a while.
